Europe is a mythological character (Europa), a geographic area, a civilisation and has been a political organisation for 60 years. The first part of the lecture will deal with the European idea inherited by the Roman Empire, Christianity, intellectuals movements such as humanism and Enlightenment and the building of states until the end of the 19th century. The second part of the lecture will deal with the construction of the European project. After World War I, the Europeans movements have laid foundations the European unity (based on cooperation, integration, and federation). But the firs
t achievements of this institutional et economical Europe will not show until the 1950s and the ratification of the Treaty of Paris in 1951 and the Treaty of Rome in 1957.
